Ministries

An Orthodox Vision of Lay Ministries

The mandate for Christian ministry has been given to us by our Lord through his words spoken to the eleven disciples who met him in Galilee before he ascended unto the Father: “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.” (Matt. 28:16-19) The ministry of Christ’s followers is to be based on His model, which was at once life example and teaching.

Our Lay Ministers

Chanter

A chanter is a lay person who assists the priest by chanting the responses and hymns in the services or sacraments of the Church. To some extent, the choir has replaced some of what chanters do. The chanters in the Orthodox Church represent the congregation. The Byzantine chanting is the dialogue between the people and the clergy.

Sacristan

The title Sacristan comes from the term Sacristy, literally a place for preparing holy things. From earliest times, Christian churches saw the order of the Sacristan blessed by a special prayer as one of the lower orders of clergy. The responsibilities of a Sacristan relate in every way to the proper care and use of holy things, and their proper placement within the church.

Minister of Evangelism

The Evangelism Minister initiates and organizes chapel evangelism projects and programs in order to increase membership. These programs are a function of  growing-up the body of Christ’s church. They encourage the present membership base to help lead seekers to the church who are their “natural network” of friends, relatives, associates and/or neighbors.

Offertory Minister

Our Offertory Ministry gives members of the Chapel who are not able to participate in other forms of liturgical ministries, an opportunity to play a role in the liturgy. Our children are special members of the congregation and are encouraged to participate.

Minister of Photography Media

The Photography Minister captures and preserves the historical record of our chapel, telling the story of our beginnings and growth within the Lincoln Way community, and as a member of the Midwest Diocese of the Orthodox Church in America.

Altar Server Leader

The Altar Server Leader organizes and instructs the altar servers and helps them know and follow what is in the handbook.
