Welcome to St. John Orthodox Chapel

St. John of Chicago Orthodox Chapel is an annex of St. Luke Orthodox Church in Palos Hills, Illinois. It has been established as a missionary outreach to those who are seeking to discover the ancient Christian faith as it exists in the 21st century and who live along the Lincoln Way corridor from New Lenox to Frankfort and south to Manhattan, Illinois.

The Sunday service is the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom which dates from the 4th century but has prayers that predate the Gospels. Other Liturgies used during the year are the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great, also from the 4th century and the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts.  This Liturgy is traditionally considered to be the work of the 6th-century pope, Saint Gregory of Rome.

In January we celebrate Theophany commemorating Christ’s baptism by John the Forerunner in the River Jordan, and the beginning of Christ’s earthly ministry.

    Prayers of Celebration

    Let us pray to the Lord.

    O Lord You require us to take up our cross and follow You. We must deny ourselves to be considered one of Your disciples. We fear the second death because we are consumed by worldly pleasures. As we begin anew this Church year, grant us the strength to carry our cross and deny the passions of the flesh. May we open our hearts so we can live in the spirit, not gaining the world and losing our soul. We pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

    Prayer for Elevation of the Cross

    Let us pray to the Lord.

    O Lord Your plan to save us began with the birth of Your Holy Mother. She was the fulfillment of the law and the prophets of the Old Covenant. She was a gift to her parents in their old age because they were so generous in the support of Your holy temple. Help us to learn the meaning of giving so we will support the work of Your church to bring comfort and healing to ourselves and all who call out to You in prayer. We pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit Amen.

    Prayer on the Nativity of the Theotokos

    Let us pray to the Lord.

    O Lord You promised to send Your Holy Spirit to guide us to all truth. Your Holy Apostle Jude exhorted us to keep the faith that was delivered to us by the apostles. On this day as we celebrate the memory of St. Luke the Apostle, strengthen our faith so we can avoid immoral acts. Purify our lives so we do not grieve the Holy Spirit in whom we pray. Through the prayers of St. Luke, O Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us. Amen.

    Prayer for the feast of St. Luke, October 18th

    Let us Pray to the Lord.

    O Lord You made Your presence known to Moses in the burning bush, to David through the ark of the covenant, to Solomon through the temple in Jerusalem and to us through Your Holy Mother. As we celebrate her entry into the temple we give thanks and commit ourselves to being generous in our giving. As the great prophets built the temple of old so we pray that we can build in our hearts Your new temple of the Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit Amen.
